Should we give money to beggers?

by Smocking Rock » Thu Dec 05, 2002 7:52 pm

This is the major problem we face in Hyderabad. We find beggers every where, temples, parks, and mostly on traffic signals, etc. One strange thing I noticed is if we give money they keep quite and if we not they curse...So is it a good thing to give money?

The more you give, the more there will be and the longer they exist. Just do not give. Over time, this profession will have to subside due to \"economic recession\" of a different type.

We do feel sorry for an old person begging,am sure all of us would have felt at some point how fortunate we were and given some money too..but if someone is resorting to it as their means of life\\\\\\\'coz its easier,i feel we shudnt encourage them. i personally believe that its worthier to buy a newspaper from the kids at the crossing who aren\\\\\\\'t looking for easy money than give it to those numerous beggars.

first, lets face it, beggars are not unique to hyd. they are there everywhere in the world. secondly they are not committing crimes, which is good in a way, so if u give in to beggars just bcos they curse u... u r basically giving in to a “Goonda”(or goondi). :) and ankita, how do u make out if a person is doing it out of helplessness or it is his \"profession\"? its easy to say \"cant they do some work\".. but work (even manual labor work) isnt easy to find. the other day a friend of mine pointed out a old miserable looking lady begging at panjagutta JN. and said \"she owns an auto that she rents out\". now i didnt verify that and it does seem a bit far fetched, but isnt it possible that not all old people are at it bcos they have no one to look after them? i think a solution could be some NGO with help from big corporates in hyd try to fix some homes for these beggars and make them work in the homes(daily work like cooking, cleaning, gardening. people who are disabled could just be reception or something like that..in fact given time i am sure they will be self sufficient). that way.. u dont need spend too much, u r making them work for it and also making sure they are off the roads.

Friends - I still believe that majority of the beggars are begging out of the unfortunate conditions in their lives. I still believe it is not a profession of choice to many ( I know quite many love to do it for easy money ). However, they are part of our society and if we truely want to wipe this shameful mark from our social fabric we must take a turn and act by starting to help the needy people around us before they are forced to start begging. We seldom think of our neighbour or relatives who are less fortunate than us and who might be needing help but cannot speak of for the sake of their dignity - but if the situation goes out of control they are forced to ask for help. And remember it is only until the first time they resist and fight within themselves and try to protect their dignity and fight the conditions but once they loose hope from all corners they have to cross all these barriers and seek help once they do it the next time is more easy and it goes on more easily thereafter. Hence help the needy before they ask for it and you will see one day there is no body asking for help. It is not impossible!!!! A single act is better than thousand words.

I think it is the height of begging..How come in just 2 minutes she beg to the same person..I cant believe this. And what if you give again they will not say thanks you have already given me I cannot accept this..NO they will happily accept and may be bargain for more...and if someone else passby they will beg to him/her also this means they are not going to stop begging!!!! This is the height I tell you.

hmm i see ur point SR. i mentioned the same thing too. some ppl do it out of helplessness.. and some bcos of the \"easy\" money. but some of these beggars want an alternative. so u got to give those guys a chance. those who are hell bent on begging.. well... maybe we can think of some stringent action later... but first we should take as many of them off the roads (those who want some alternative) as possible.

yeah we must give a chance, and that to only for disabled people, blind people, mad people (I feel really pity abt them)...and one more thing we should encourage people who work (any sort like we find people in trains, they sweep and ask money).

Hi again! I saw recently a song which really touched my heart - this was by Phil Collins, \"Another Day in Paradise\". It was featured for the homeless people across world, and what you people think is the situation in India and in Hyderabad, seems to be always there. What should our Government do for these people??Think Twice...
