Tech help

by Igiveadamn » Sun Nov 28, 2004 1:42 am

I need some advice regarding a certain process which has been eating up my computer's resources. There is this application called 'odbcvb.exe' which is running in the background. It's eating up a lot of memory and CPU cycles. My computer is running too slow. I cannot even end the process. When I am trying to quit that process from the task manager, another application with the same name opens up. I haven't even found any information on the web. So any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hear from you guys. thanks in advance.

Did you try "End Process Tree" option in the task manager?

It could be a trojan masquerading as a process.

Try this:

1. Reboot in the safe mode.

2. Go to the Task Manager and kill it from there.

3. If you know how to edit the registry, edit the registry with REGEDIT and remove the odbcvb.exe process from the Run keys at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

4. Reboot.

Let me know if it is ok after that.

Hi lonewolf, thanks for the reply. I had tried all of that before and it's ok for now. But I am at a loss as to what the application is about. It was eating up almost 150 MB of memory and would never quit. I have that application quarantined for now, incase I might need it for something later. I am pretty sure that it's a trojan but I don't want to take any risks. So if you have any information at all, can you please tell me? Thanks a lot for your time.

No problem IGAD. I don't know anything about that application, but if its screwing up with your CPU/memory, just end it. I googled on it and see nothing that talks about it. Probably its a new trojan or a clone of some malicious code.

IGAD,Jus' got this from a tech-Forum......

Check your startup entries.

Goto Start -> Run -> MSconfig

Under MSconfig, look for the "Startup" tab (right most)

Under Startup, un-check all those entries that you feel are suspicious or are related to the above name.

Then Apply -> OK -> Restart

And generally I would have adviced you to do a spyware or a virus check,
but odbcbv isn't any known or documented virus/spyware. On the other hand odbcbv.exe isn't a standard windows system file either so its safe to
delete it. I suggest in addition to the above, start your compter in safe
mode (press F8 while booting) and search for odbcbv.exe in your My Computer
and delete or rename the found files.
