I think he writes pretty well....gives a very good mental picture of life in America in the last century. More than his "Tom Sawyer" novel, I just love his absorbing book "Huckleberry Finn"...it was even made into a movie long ago.

asli_badmash wrote:Where do you people find time to read so much ? The only time I get to read is early in the morning sitting on the crapper or in the night before I am ready to doze off

:D yes...the "crapper" is the best place to read undisturbed (unless its early in the morning!)! i read anything, anywhere, if i am free. for finding time read, i believe "where there's a will, there's a way"...!

maybe reading the book wud give us an insight into a typically sick mind...i think this knowledge can be useful in recognizing signs of the "Nazi" creatures sprouting in India these days...

whoever said i was sellin it? i want to get in in my hands! but, u can still buy it if u find it anywhere, coz its definitely an interesting read.. n from what ive heard makes u sympathise with Hitler :!: which makes it all the more effective as propaganda material .. no wonder the German ppl burdened with the war/hatred seized it as the bible of the time

My Favourites

by Jai » Wed Mar 24, 2004 11:56 pm

I do not mind reading any subjects and a book always gives me a good break from the monotonous work schedules I go through. I love reading fictions a lot and my favourite are Fredrick Forsyth and John Grisham.

In fact I believe Forsyth is one of the best fiction writer's of our times and i really felt very sad when he announced he would stop writing some 2 years back. He also announced that ICON which got released at that time would be his last novel. But somehow he has made great comeback and his latest novel the Avenger is a must read. Actually the line between fact and fiction is so thin in most of his novels that it is sometimes hard to write them off as just imaginations.

John Grisham on the other hand writes 100% pure fiction and most of his novels are based on his profession, law. The style of his writing makes each and every novel of his a must read and a real page turner.

I also loved the first four Harry potter series and was quite amazed with JK rowling's imagination. But the Fifth instalment was not that interesting for me..i felt that way because it was too huge and there were really toom many plots..that at one point of time i wanted to read the climax rather than those plots.

One thing I really found pretty intriguing is I did not get the same satisfaction when a movie made out of a novel. Movies like Harrypotter..Time to kill..Client..Fourth Protocol makes really interesting reading rather than watching them.

Oh...it wasnt u...I guess it was PSD then....anyways...the Anarchist's Cookbook is a book banned by the givt of US because it contains manuals to make bombs and other weapons. It's what Tim McVeigh started out with and most homebred AMerican Terrorists use.

I wanna confess something.....

I dont like Reading books, esp fictional stuff and imaginary things. I like reading some select best philosophical stuff and some good life biographies or some best sellers mostly mysteries.

Now i wanna ask two things.

1) Why the hell do i dislike reading like a voracious reader. I tried to get myself interested in reading et al, but was never successful. So cud someone give me tips to generate interest in me. ( the prob is i am curious and knowledge hungry... and mama said books r the knowledge carriers).

2) Some good suggestions for a great reading in all genres of writing.

I read the same kinda books that you are talking about. Fact based.. I dislike, "he said-she said" kinda bull, where the author takes you on a journey that you sometime wish you wouldnt ever had started. Thats what those fat tomes of fiction are all about. There are exceptions though.

Also, there is no magic fairy dust.. that we sprinkle on you and voila you are a voracious reader. Its something inside of you that makes you wanna pick up a book and devour it.

Some people read and gather knowledge, come observe and gather knowledge. Some people are born smart. Maybe you were born smart!

Swathi, Andhra prabha and rachana....do they count as books? :P ah well...they are just weekly's(?)

I was never interested in books courtesy JKM. I guess thats what happens when the first book u try to read at the age of 12 is JK's philosphy fron your dad's collection......the first line of the book starts something like "What is life?". Never went past the first page and never touched anohter book.

But I love telugu literature. Ramana is my favourite writer, I only read short stories. Love his style of writing and humour (and those bapu cartoons on his books are a bonus). I wanted to read more of chalam's works, I read only one book, dunno remember the name, its about the oppression of a brahmin widow.

(seems I am the odd one out here)

BTW, did anyone read Budugu? I am looking for the entire collection, couldnt find any site which sells it. I donk know the publisher. Any help is appreciated.

yea mayavi bhai u r a STAR now :P

Well how about chandamama? I never read any other telugu magazine apart from looking at those yummy ;) pics from swathi, andhrabhoomi et al :P

I AM IN LOVE WITH CALVIN n HOBBES, and ASTERIX. :)

Calvin is like my alterego, not dat i had the same childhood, but he defines philosophy to me in a simple way. He makes one ponder about things in life which r simple but not actually simple... gives profound meaning to things.

Stopped reading Chandamama as the quality of stories deteriorated.

If you want to brush up your telugu read Rachana.
