Jobs for an American in Hyd?

by Mike » Sat Jan 20, 2007 9:33 pm

I was wondering what sort of jobs, if any, would be available for a U.S. citizen in Hyderabad (or Bangalore...those seem to be the two hot cities). Here in the U.S., I teach prep classes for standardized tests (GRE, GMAT, etc.) and was wondering if there's a market for that there. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Just for fun, I think I'll do a little poll below...where do you think I should pursue my big international adventure?

Why???

by Suggestion » Mon Jan 22, 2007 8:31 am

I am unable to comprehend the reason for such a thing that is working in Hyd or any other place from US, if you think that you will learn some extraordinary skills in IT then thats an ILLUSION of yous IT in India is nothign but cheap labor ...

Or if you think that you can smoke crazy stuff then thats risky..becuase you will be in the company of nut cases..anywayz if you are sort of an adveturer with no real reasons behind decisions then you can anywhere it wont matter which place you go to in that case.

No, I don't think I'll learn anything to advance any sort of career. I just want to experience another culture and it seems like there are a lot of jobs available over there. Plus the cost of living is extremely low compared to the U.S. And there's pretty much nothing interesting or rewarding to do here.

I also don't want to smoke anything. I'd like to eat a lot of biryani. Also in my spare time I'd like to try to make it big in Tollywood.

Well i guess you would have openings as a voice or an accent trainer with one of the corporates in Hyderabad. You would love the place especially the food and the warmth of the people. ....definitely you will find your routine less mechanical here.

But, is HYD not a better place in teaching you IT skills?? If indian dudes have to work for multinational companies, dont they need good IT skills?

What is your general opinion of IT schools in Hyderabad? Like I've heard there is one or two on every street in Hyderabad. But, lets consider the good, trusted ones if there are any?

What do you say dude?

thanks.

Its seems to me that you are not an American or if you are an American of Indian origin.

There isnt any great thing to smoke there...I know that should be your primary reason to go anywhere...neither can this trip be the silver bullet to your problems you will end up having big holes in your financial egg nest.It seems you dont have anything significant to do and think that somehow this trip will be the solution to all your problems...

Third is you already know that there a is a IT School on every street , what kinda opinion do you think one can have..no It doesnt take much to work for an MNC (a abbrevation thats commonly used in India ONLY which makes me think of yoru origin)...anways what do you know about IT???

Tell me about any great product you used the idea of which was made in Hyderabad or India.. any original ideas, dont give me the crap about how the IT work is being done thats just at the service level i.e once thats what I call the cheap labor , anything invented ...or originally made in Hyderabd/India.

My goodness! You're certainly down on India!

My country is over the hill. We did great things in the past but we're headed for decline. Countries like India and China represent the future.

Hyderabad

by Sasidhar » Thu Jan 25, 2007 6:04 am

Hi Mike,

Hyderabad would be your safe bet compared to other Indian cities. Pune and Bangalore could be good choices too.

There is an institute called "Time" which trains students aggressively for GRE and GMAT. You could appoach them, if you already have an experience in teaching.

If exploring a new culture is your main idea behind considering working in Hyd, I recommend trying volunteering work. There are some charity organizations which let people travel and volunteer. You may want to explore more in that direction.

Indian salaries, while sufficient for reasonable living in the city, are palty amounts if you do raw dollar-to-rupee conversion. You will have to keep that in mind.

Good luck,

Sasi.

"Visu consultacy services" also trains students for GRE and GMAT. You could try them too.

Hi Mike,

Wanting to understand and experience another culture is a great idea . I believe that it helps you grow as a person and expands your horizon. And Hyderabad, at this point of time, is the best place to be in among Indian cities. And yes, you are right - the cost of living in Hyderabad is relatively lower than the other places in India.

What can you do? You have multiple options. Despite the fact that India is on an upswing, a lot of people still want to go to the US. And so, yes, exams such as TOEFL, GRE and GMAT are still in vogue. And there are training institutes for such examinations. Since you are already experienced in the field and since you are a native speaker of the language getting a job in such a training institute is not likely to be difficult.

The second option I can think of is the BPO industry. As you very well know the BPO field is the fastest growing in this country. A lot of people are employed in this industry and the main issue with most of them is communication skills, especially conversing in an American accent. There are independent training institutes that could work with to advance people's communication skills. The BPOs themselves could definitely use your expertise in order to train their own employees.

If language is not what you want to work with, but are interested in the IT field, oh well, what do you know - as someone rightly pointed out, there is an IT industry for almost every 5 streets in this country. So, of course, that is an option that can always be looked into.

As with any other country, India has its share of problems too, which seem amplified due to the fact that the population is really huge here. But it has its own share of positives that will make your stay here a rewarding experience. People are warm, open and friendly, maybe a bit too informal for one's liking - essentially, you will be welcomed and accepted with open hearts. Cuisine is diverse and if you are a foodie, you are sure to enjoy it. And as you rightly pointed out, Indian cinema (including Tollywood), that is gonna be an experience in itself.

Bangalore has greater advantages in terms of IT growth itself. But I would still recommend Hyderabad because I do think it is a better place to live in, except during the summer months.

All the best making a decision!

Career development

by Aishwarya » Sat Feb 10, 2007 7:49 am

Here are my ideas, I hope you like them:

1.I suggest you go to Jhumri tallayya (a village in Bihar) and get a phone. And call All India Radio and request songs and dedicate it to all the fauji bhai out there!

2. Buy a TV and keep watching DD, esp krishidarshan kinda serials. I want you to work on increasing the TRP rating of such shows.

I can list more if you are interested. Oh by the way, for all this, you HAVE to come to India!

He he he. :-) Mike you would actually have to be in India and listen to All India Radio to understand what is being said here. Although I wonder if they still have programs where people from Jhumri Tallaiyya dedicate songs to fauji bhai (soldiers in Indian Army). Brought back some nostalgic memories from the good old days of carefree childhood.
