in a nostalgic mood...

listenig to ABBA takes me back to my childhood...the first time i heard english songs along with groups like BoneyM, Ossibissa, BeeGees, Cat Stevens (yes, the guy who was thrown out of US recently), Tina Turner, Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, Doors etc etc. my dad got a load of those tapes from Dubai in '79 and i spent many years of my childhood listenig to them!

EXACTLY mere childhood ke baare main baat karrai miyan. I also grew up listening to tapes my dad, mom and uncle brougth back with them from Duabi (about '83 or so).



Ye sare Bands ke gaane were being hammered into me brain when I couldnt even talk. I also remember Supernature, and a guy called Demischeros (sp?).



That was the best time for music. MJ, Madonna, and the like were also churning out highly polished music those days (not like the MJ and Madonna of today).

Nahi re! Mebbe it is because we have not listened a lot to that cassette. We used to tape the original cassette onto some other one (to preserve the original).

I'm not surprised that people are comparing Junoon with retard bands from all around the world. The fact is that people with monocentric music tastes (and I'm not saying its wrong) will always have problems appreciating fusion. And Junoon play a genre of music that's probably the ultimate combo in fusion - Oriental philosophical lyrics sung in a rock tempo blended with folk strains. And purists (I'm very sure MM2 is one) will always find fault with something that doesn't belong to a singular genre.



Comparing Junoon with Ace of Base, Bryan Adams etc. would not be appropriate as they all play different kinds of music. But for those who are open to expanding their horizons, here's the lodown on Junoon's music.



The lyrics have all the passion and the mysticism of the sufi movement. These though-provoking lyrics are then enrobed in an extremely unorthodox package of folk & rock fusion. This combination gives out a magical result - you can't help getting a lump in your throat if you follow the lyrics.



Someone rightly said on this very thread - To each his own. I like Junoon. Call me a teenage girl of wierd tastes, call me an utter fool when it comes to music...call me whatever...but the fact remains that for me, Junoon rules.

I guess we started off on a wrong foot HP, with the whole Pink Floyd thing. And i tend to appreciate music as and how it is created, but then again the key word here is created. but not music made to enthrall the commercial record companies. I so totally loved the first release of Junoon, was awesome...lyrics were in urdu something i could comprehend, but the later release, which i had a listen the last time i was in india... just did nt make any sense to me... the whole new chic loook of the band members, the lead guitarist deserting teh band (or being kicked out). well not anymore. on the contrary, i tend to appreciate Euphoria for their folk culture and fusion(if thats the term, u seem is the catch phrase). well, again, the earlier days of euphoria again.



Yet again..... u have ur opinion... so do i. that does nt give u any right to nail me as a purist or vice versa, according to context.



And if u really want some fusion/world which i think is awesome, i would nt mind recommending.....you would definitely not be disappointed.

That comes across as self contradictory MM2. The look of the band members, members leaving the band or being shunted out..not really parameters that define a band's music.

Their style has stayed very much similar through Azaadi, Parwaaz and a couple of other albums. No doubt, they have a penchant for skirting controversy, but in no way does that make their music any better or worse.

As you said, we all have a right to our own opinions. Please note that in my last post, I mentioned very clearly that monocentric and puritan tastes in music are not bad. So, peace!!

I was a member of SPIC-MACAY (Delhi Chapter) and attended a workshop conducted by Pt.Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on the nuances of rigid classical music and the then newly evolving fusion/world music. Pt. Bhatt incidentally went on to win the Grammy for world music and his experiments with the Veena are legendary.

well...i just wanna make a couple of things clear.....first brian...the band member who left..(due to personal problems)was not the lead guitarist he was the bass guitarist.....

and im glad u like euphoria..because they themselves said that they were inspired by junoons music

hey HP, when i talked about the transformation of the band from a genuine performing band to a media savy, and metrosexual band, i meant to emphasis on the transformation music wise too, i might not have had enough time to spend to buy a CD and listen to these guy's later albums after their first release, but from what i saw on TV and heard, they style of music did change a lot... definitely can say, it was nt a good change, and maybe they have changed back to their original style, have no idea as to how the new album is.

hey, i was a member of Spic Macay, the hyderabad chapter and also Pt Jasraj Music foundation, actually one of the initiation members which is located at Nizam college, am sure u must have heard of it.

and about Pt Batt s Mohan Veena, he is an amazing artist, i have nt really seen various play the slididng guitar, but nothying comparable to Vishwa mohan Batt..yeah, his creations with the guitar are legendry
